ATHENS -- Local media reported that authorities called for the evacuation of three villages and tourist resorts as a wildfire continues to rage on western Greece's Chios island on Saturday. The local Fire Brigade said there have been no reports of injuries, although dense smoke has blanketed a large portion of the island. The fire front stretches for about 25 kilometers and continue to bear down on residential areas. Over 100 fire fighters backed by soldiers and 12 water dropping planes struggle to contain the flames which are being fanned by strong winds. The blaze broke out on Saturday and has already razed forested areas and a number mastic trees which have been used by locals for centuries to produce natural gum.
