15 Pilgrims Dead, 17 Injured in Traffic Mishap in Indian-Controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR -- Officials said 15 Hindu pilgrims died while 17 others suffered injuries when their passenger bus plunged into a deep gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The incident happened on Saturday evening close to Digdol in the district of Ramban. According to a police official in the district, the tragic accident occurred at about 11:10 p.m. when the bus skidded off the road and fell into a gorge, killing 15 people and injuring 17 others. He added that all the people aboard were Hindu pilgrims. Officials said the bus was en route from Srinagar to Jammu, when the tragedy struck. The country's official broadcaster All India Radio, reported on Sunday that 10 people were killed on spot, four others died while being rushed to hospital and another breathed his last at the hospital. Initial investigations indicate that the mishap was caused by negligence on the part of the driver. Authorities said there were 32 people traveling in the bus at that time. The injured victims were taken to district hospital Ramban while those in critical conditions were referred to Jammu hospital.
