Pilot Killed as Plane Crashes in Southern Russia

MOSCOW -- Local media reported that a single-engine plane went down on Saturday in the Rosvtov region in southern Russia, killing the pilot. A local emergency official was cited by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying that the plane crash-landed close to the village of Grachi in Belokalitvinsk district. The pilot, the lone person aboard, was killed on the spot. A spokesman from the Emergency Ministry said a traffic controller received a message at 8:38 a.m. (Moscow time/0438 GMT) regarding the crash. Local media reports said the aircraft broke into pieces when it hit the ground. Fortunately, the incident did not cause any damage to structures in the area. The ministry spokesman added that an investigation was under way.
