155,000 People Affected after 6.6 Magnitude Quake in Xinjiang

URUMQI -- Local authorities reported on Sunday that over 155,000 people have been affected by the 6.6-magnitude quake that rocked Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Saturday morning. Officials of the government of Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture said that as of 7 p.m. on Sunday, the number of injured victims has risen to 52 while about 48,000 people had been evacuated after the tremor jolted a mountainous area located along the border of Xinyuan and Hejing counties at 5:07 a.m. The quake also caused 7,500 homes to collapse and damaged 64,000 more. The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Disaster Reduction Committee responded to the emergency and sent relief goods to the affected areas. The ministry allotted 2,000 tents, 10,000 cotton coats and 10,000 quilts to the quake-stricken areas. Regional governments also sent 230 tents, 120 quilts, 5.1 tons of flour and 480 kilograms of vegetable oil.
