ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- The death toll from the Wednesday car bombing in a busy marketplace in Peshawar has climbed to 106 with more than 150 people injured. Authorities and rescue sources believe that more victims could still be trapped under the rubble.
A total of 160 people were brought to hospitals in the capital of North West Frontier Province(NWFP), and a list of 136 injured victims have been posted inside hospital premises.
Based on reports, the blast that took place at Peepal Mandi, close to the Meena Bazaar of Peshawar. The blast caused a fire to break out in nearby establishments while an old building toppled due to the force of the explosion, which also resulted into damages to other surrounding structures.
According to Shafqatullah Malik, an official with the Bomb Disposal Unit, the explosives that were planted in the vehicle could have weighed up to 150 kilograms.
Meanwhile, Peshawar district officer Sahibzada Anees confirmed 95 casualties in the attack while hospital sources siad 89 people have died, adding that most of the victims were women and children.
The condition of a number of the injured is said to be serious, raising fears that the death toll could increase further.
