NEW DELHI --  Local police said that a tractor-trolley skidded off the road and plunged into a deep, water-logged ditch on Monday evening in India's Uttar Pradesh. Eighteen people on board the trolley were killed. 

There were also fourteen others who sustained injuries in the accident which took place in the town of Pisawan in Sitapur district, about 80 km from Uttar Pradesh's capital city of Lucknow.

According to district police chief Amitabh Yash, the accident occurred when the driver of the tractor-trolley attempted to overtake a vehicle. The driver lost control of his vehicle and fell into the ditch along the road. Among the 18 reported casualties, 10 are children while the remaining are women. Those who were injured have been rushed to a hospital in Sitapur.
