TOKYO -- Toyota Motors has recalled some 200,000 Prius-hybrid cars sold in Japan in 2009 due to a brake defect. It wasn't immediately clear whether the recall would be extended to Prius models sold outside the country.
Toyota is already tackling the recall of 8 million vehicles this year because of accelerator problems. In Japan and in the US, there have been complaints that the brakes fail when the vehicle is driven on rough roads.
It is believed that the brake problem would affect some 270,000 Prius models that were sold in Japan and the US starting last May.
Toyota had put the blame on a software problem and said it has already repaired vehicles sold this year.
The company announced on Tuesday that the Hybrid Sai, marketed only in Japan, and Lexus HS250h, sold worldwide, were also part of the recall.
