URUMQI, China -- Local authorities said Friday that the bodies of four miners killed in a colliery collapse in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have been found.
The Wusu Municipal government issued a statement saying that the bodies of the miners were recovered by rescue workers at 5:06 a.m. Friday and were consequently confirmed dead at 8 a.m.
The collapse took place on Monday at around 8:30 p.m. in the pit of Yuanli Coal Mine located in Wusu, trapping the four miners.
The colliery, originally called Wusu Dianzhangou Coal Mine, stopped operation in 2005 when the government closed down small coal mines over safety hazards.
The facility's annual production was increased from 30,000 to 90,000 tonnes and it was renamed Yuanli in 2007 and resumed operations in October 2008 with the approval of the regional government.
The city government is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
