The fall surveillance program that is organized in Alberta every year to survey cases of the chronic wasting disease has brought some good news. It has been found that the number of the cases reported for the year of 2009 were fewer than that for 2008. Another aspect that has shown change is the place where the cases were detected.

It has been found that the disease seems to have been found more south and west than it was ever found on previous occasions. Since September 2009, more than 4800 deer heads have been provided to the authorities by the hunters to facilitate their testing for the chronic wasting disease.
