Police said all hostages taken by heavily armed gangsters who raided a high class Rio de Janeiro hotel have been released, adding that one person was killed in a shootout while nine suspects were arrested. The exact number of hostages was unclear. Police said there were 30 while the Intercontinental Hotel manager Michel Chertuh said the number was likely between 15 and 20. The incident began when a group of gunmen engaged police in a shoot-out outside the hotel on Saturday. After an intense exchange of gunfire, the criminals burst into the hotel where about 400 guests were staying at the time. Police had the hotel surrounded while helicopters hovered above looking for missing gang members. Witnesses said there were about 20 gunmen and the incident took place in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro, in front of Sao Conrado beach.
