Abandoned German Satellite Expected to Fall on Earth This Week
BERLIN -- Media reports said an abandoned German satellite is expected to fall back to Earth this week. However, the exact time and location remain unknown. The German space agency estimated a landfall time of the X-ray space observatory satellite between October 21 and October 25. The agency said about 1.6 tons of debris, consisting of glass and ceramic fragments, could survive the re-entry into the atmosphere and hit the Earth's surface at a speed of 28,000 kph. Officials at the agency told the media that there is only a 1-in-2,000 chance that the debris could hit someone, although the risk of serious injury should be very small.
