Forest Fire in Chile Engulfs 50 Hectares of Land, Destroys 73 Homes

SANTIAGO -- The Peruvian network Radio Programas del Peru said a forest fire close to the Beagle Channel in Viña del Mar has already engulfed over 50 hectares of land and destroyed at least 73 homes. La Nación reported that the National Office of Emergencies of the Interior Ministry has declared a red alert for the Valparaiso region. La Nación added that 20 people have been injured, including 11 with burns and six who suffered from smoke inhalation. The fire has yet to be completely controlled and authorities intend to set up emergency housing for the 300 victims. La Tercera said local officials believe the fire may have been deliberately started. Radio Santiago reported that a public worker saw three suspicious individuals in the area where the fire broke out on Saturday.
