Hong Kong health authorities reported two fatal cases of the A/H1N1 flu on Wednesday, raising the death toll of the new flu virus in the region to five since Sunday.
As of Wednesday, Hong Kong's total number of confirmed A/H1N1 cases has risen to 12,456.
The Yan Chai Hospital released a statement saying that a 59-year-old man with a chronic illness developed the classic flu symptoms on August 15, and was later confined at the isolation room of the hospital on Aug. 20. During the patient's hospital stay, he was given Tamiflu and antibiotics.
His condition deteriorated prompting the hospital's medical staff to transfer him to the the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Aug. 21. On the same day, he tested positive for the A/H1N1 flu. His condition continued to deteriorate and he eventually passed away at 1:57 a.m. on Wednesday.
In a releted incident, the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital reported that a 47 year-old male patient who suffered from leukemia was admitted to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit due to fever and dyspnea on Aug. 27. He then tested positive for the A/H1N1 flu on Aug. 28. He remained in critical condition and required ventilation support during hospitalizations. He then passed away at around 4:06 p.m. on Wednesday.
