Hanoi -- Vietnam's Ministry of Health confirmed on Thursday 228 new cases of the A/H1N1 flu over the past 48 hours, bringing the country's total number of flu cases to 3,021.
The ministry's report said that among the newly confirmed cases, 186 were detected in the south, 22 cases were confirmed in the north and 20 cases were reported in the central highland provinces.
Trinh Quan Huan, the deputy minister of health stated that the country would experience a surge in the number of flu cases when winter comes. According to the World Health Organization, the A/H1N1 virus may find suitable environment to mutate into a new strain in cold weather condition.
Out of the total number of flu cases, 1,410 patients have recovered and have been discharged from hospitals while the rest are currently under quarantine and are receiving further medical treatment.
Vietnam has reported two fatal cases of the A/H1N1 flu since its outbreak.
