A hailstorm that passed through Lonoke County damaged about 26,000 acres of soybean, rice and corn crops. Jeff Welch, the Lonoke County agent for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, says the hail damage from Tuesday's storm was the worst he's ever seen in terms of scale. He says that between 22 and 27 farmers suffered anywhere from 60 percent to 100 percent crop damage. About 16,260 acres of soybeans, 8,130 acres of rice and 1,600 acres of corn were hit. The National Weather Service said the storm dumped hail the size of golf balls and baseballs on Lonoke and Pulaski counties. Farmers in the area already were running behind schedule after heavy rainfall in May. Welch says most of the farmers affected by this week's storm did not have crop insurance.
