ATHENS -- Local media reported that Greek coast guards recovered at least 15 bodies on Saturday morning on the beach of Lesvos island. The victims were illegal migrants en route to Greece but their ship sank in the eastern Aegean sea. Local authorities issued a statement saying that the coast guard managed to rescue a 20 year-old man who claimed that there were 28 immigrants on board the ship which set sail from Turkey. He was taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment while authorities continue the search and rescue operation in the nearby area. Thousands of illegal immigrants, particularly those from Asian and African nations, try to enter Greece through its borders with Turkey with the aim of gaining access to other member states of the European Union (EU).
